Equilibrium cluster formation and gelation

چکیده
We study the formation and growth of equilibrium clusters in a suspension of weakly-charged colloidal particles and small non-adsorbing polymers. The effective potential is characterised by a short-range attraction and a long-range repulsion. The size, shape and local structure of the clusters are studied using three-dimensional particle microscopy. We observe a rapid growth in the mean cluster size and the average number of nearest neighbours approaching the gel boundary. Submitted to: J. Phys.: Condens. Matter

Equilibrium and non-equilibrium cluster phases in colloids with competing interactions.
The phase behavior of colloids that interact via competing interactions - short-range attraction and long-range repulsion - is studied by computer simulation. In particular, for a fixed strength and range of repulsion, the effect of the strength of an attractive interaction (ε) on the phase behavior is investigated at various colloid densities (ρ). A thermodynamically stable equilibrium colloid...
متن کاملCoagulation of charged microparticles in neutral gas and charge-induced gel transitions.
Coagulation of charged particles was studied using the mean-field Smoluchowski equation. The coagulation equation was generalized for the case of a conserved system of charged particles. It was shown that runaway cluster growth (gelation) solutions exist if the charge-dipole (induced) interaction of clusters is included. When clusters are in thermal equilibrium with the ambient gas, the charge-...
متن کاملDiffusion-induced spontaneous pattern formation on gela- tion surfaces
– Although the pattern formation on polymer gels has been considered as a result of the mechanical instability due to the volume phase transition, we found a macroscopic surface pattern formation not caused by the mechanical instability. It develops on gelation surfaces, and we consider the reaction-diffusion dynamics mainly induces a surface instability during polymerization. Random and straig...
متن کاملEquilibrium gels of low-valence DNA nanostars: a colloidal model for strong glass formers.
Kinetic arrest in colloidal dispersions with isotropic attractive interactions usually occurs through the destabilization of the homogeneous phase and the formation of a non-equilibrium network of jammed particles. Theory and simulations predict that a different route to gelation should become available when the valence of each colloidal particle is suitably reduced. Under these conditions, gel...
متن کاملFormulation of Ibuprofen Beads by Ionotropic Gelation
Microencapsulation has become a common technique in the production of controlled release dosage forms. Many results have been reported, concerning the use of alginate beads as controlled release drug formulations. Alginate has a unique gel-forming property in the presence of multivalent cations, in an aqueous medium. Ibuprofen is an excellent analgesic and antipyretic, non-steroidal anti-inflam...
